Are any alpacas harmed when harvesting their fleece?Updated 14 hours ago
We’re proud to partner with PACOMARCA to ensure the highest standards in alpaca care. Each alpaca is shorn using a special technique called Inca Esquila—a gentle, mechanized process that reduces stress and time during shearing. In fact, it’s been adopted by the Peruvian government as the official national shearing standard (NTP 231.370-2014).
Alpacas are only shorn once a year, and we never shear them all the way to the skin, so they stay warm and comfortable.
As part of our commitment to animal welfare, we donate 1% of all sales to AIA, a nonprofit working directly with alpaca farmers to ensure that mechanized electric shearing is used to minimize stress and promote healthier animals.
It’s also important to know that alpacas need to be shorn once a year for their health. Without it, they can become overheated, immobilized, and prone to infection—so annual shearing is an essential part of their hygiene and care.
